Field of application

A satellite battery system required custom-designed heaters precise temperature control. The goal was to prevent battery capacity loss in the cold vacuum of space and to ensure a stable power supply throughout the mission.

Complexity of the task

The challenge

Battery and electronic systems in satellites are subjected to severe thermal cycling and extremely low ambient temperatures. In the vacuum of space, convective heat transfer is also absent, which means that controlled heat management must rely exclusively on radiation and thermal conduction.

Technical challenges:

  • Preventing battery capacity loss
  • Variations in power density within complex assemblies
  • Integration into molded surfaces
  • Minimizing weight and energy consumption
  • Long-term reliability for mission-critical applications and continuous operation
The answer

Our solution

For this project, molded Kaptonheaters with etched heating conductor structures were developed. The heaters precisely adapted to the battery segments and enable homogeneous heat distribution with high temperature precision.
