Key benefits: Wide frequency range, exact simulation of harmonic distortions, extensive programming functions, high adaptability to a wide range of testing tasks

Field of application
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a key measurement technique in the development of electrochemical systems such as fuel cells, batteries, supercapacitors and, increasingly, electrolysis devices. For stack development, EIS enables a deeper understanding of the stack design, the analysis of voltage disparities between cells, the evaluation of components such as bipolar plates and the monitoring of parameters relating to the state of health and ageing behavior of cells and stacks.
Our customer, HyCentA Research GmbH, carries out international research and development projects in its advanced laboratory for precisely such tasks.
The challenge
- High-current application with up to 6,000A
- Frequency modulations up to 10kHz
- PEM and AEM electrolysis stacks with an output of 1 to 15 kW
- Cathode pressure up to 160 bar
- Possibility of operation under explosive atmospheres on the anode/oxygen side (incl. concentration)
- Voltage monitoring of each cell in the stack
- Multi-channel parallel EIS measurement of all cells in the stack
- Up to 24 cells
- EIS frequency range: 0.01 Hz - 10 kHz
Our solution
For this project, the laboratory was equipped with four programmable power supply units from the G5.SRC series series. Including function generator, installed in 2 cabinets. The output of the power supply can be adjusted depending on the test set-up. Different stacks can be tested in the test bench; depending on the power requirements, the modular power supply units can be interconnected to provide a power supply of up to 8,000A. This eliminates the time-consuming adjustments that occur with separate direct and alternating current sources.
The high accuracy and dynamics of the G5.SRC series, as well as the ability to easily switch between different multiple configurations, make this series the ideal power supply solution for test bench applications, allowing our customer to react flexibly to new requirements.
