Fuel cells provide a reliable power supply when no power grid is available or when long-term emergency power is needed. They are suitable for self-sufficient applications and for safeguarding critical infrastructure. For companies affected by NIS2, maintaining critical operational processes is becoming even more important: business continuity and crisis management measures are part of the required risk prevention measures. Ing. Erhard Fischer offers methanol and hydrogen fuel cells for a variety of power requirements, as well as for stationary and mobile applications.

Zero emissions, long service life, and low maintenance requirements

Fuel cells are particularly well-suited for applications that require long backup times and a reliable energy supply. Unlike diesel generators, they produce no local CO₂ or pollutant emissions during operation; furthermore, fuel cells operate much more quietly and require less maintenance. For long periods of autonomous operation, the energy supply can be extended by refueling without the need for correspondingly large battery storage systems. Fuel cells can also supplement UPS, photovoltaic, or wind power systems, thereby supporting the energy supply during power outages or when energy generation is unavailable.

  • The potential power output and backup time depend on the selected fuel cell solution and the available fuel supply. They can be designed to range from 25 W to the MW range, thereby achieving backup times ranging from a few hours to months. Methanol and hydrogen fuel cells are available to meet different power requirements. For long runtime periods, the supply can be extended by refueling without the need to maintain correspondingly large battery storage systems. This makes fuel cells suitable for both self-sufficient applications and long-term emergency power supply. The specific design is tailored to the power requirements and the desired runtime of the respective application.

  • Fuel cells require less maintenance than traditional diesel generators or battery solutions. One reason for this is the smaller number of moving parts. In addition, with hydrogen (H2), there is no risk of fuel aging or degradation, as can occur with diesel. The specific maintenance requirements and intervals depend on the fuel cell system used and the particular application. As a result, fuel cells are particularly well-suited for applications that require a reliable power supply with minimal ongoing maintenance.

  • Fuel cells operate significantly more quietly than conventional diesel generators and produce no local CO₂ or pollutant emissions during operation. Because they have fewer moving parts, maintenance requirements are also lower. Another advantage is that, with hydrogen, there is no risk of diesel aging or fuel degradation. This makes fuel cells particularly well-suited for applications that require a reliable power supply with low local emissions, low noise levels, and minimal maintenance.

  • Yes. In the event of a power outage, the UPS initially takes over the power supply and bridges the first few seconds or minutes. The fuel cell can then take over as the long-term power source and provide the necessary energy over an extended period. This reduces the need for large battery banks to cover long backup periods. The combination is therefore particularly well-suited for applications that require a reliable, long-term emergency power supply.
