Temperature stabilization for high-resolution sensors – ensuring stable detector performance and high signal quality.
Brief overview
- Industry: Aerospace, Defense
- Field of application: EO/IR systems and electro-optical sensors
- Applications: Infrared detectors, CCD/CMOS sensors, and optical assemblies
- Key benefits:reduced image noise, higher sensitivity, stable measurement results, compact integration

Field of application
A custom thermoelectric module was developed for an EO/IR reconnaissance system to stabilize the temperature of an infrared detector. The goal was to maintain the detector temperature at a defined setpoint even under varying environmental conditions. This minimizes temperature-induced drift effects and ensures stable detector performance.
Typical applications:
- EO/IR reconnaissance systems
- Thermal imaging cameras
- Target detection and tracking systems
- Hyperspectral cameras
- Airborne and ground-based sensor systems
The challenge
The performance of modern IR detectors depends largely on a stable operating temperature. Even slight temperature fluctuations can lead to changes in the signal-to-noise ratio, increased image noise, and reduced measurement stability. Precise temperature control is therefore necessary to ensure reproducible detector performance.
Technical challenges:
- Precise temperature stabilization of the detector
- Minimizing image noise and drift
- Large temperature differences in a confined space
- Efficient heat dissipation on the hot side of the Peltier system
- Integration into compact optoelectronic systems
- High reliability under vibration and shock loads
Our solution
For this project, a custom thermoelectric assembly was developed to cool and stabilize the temperature of the infrared detector. The solution combines a multi-stage Peltier element with an application-specific heat sink and integrated temperature sensors. The coordinated design of cooling capacity, thermal interface, and temperature control ensures a stable detector temperature even under changing environmental conditions.
Technical specifications:
- Multi-stage Peltier module
- Custom assembly including heat sink and sensors
- Precise temperature control for stable and reproducible measurement results
- Optimized thermal management for efficient heat dissipation
- Compact design for optoelectronic systems
