Key benefits: Wide frequency range, exact simulation of harmonic distortions, extensive programming functions, high adaptability to a wide range of testing tasks

Field of application
Security and quality of supply are crucial when it comes to the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy. Simulations and measurements help to identify potential sources of error and clarify how the grid behaves under certain circumstances and why. The tasks are diverse and range from EMC investigations and the grid connection behavior of electrical systems to stability tests or the effects of geomagnetically induced currents.
Our customer, the Institute for Electrical Systems and Grids at Graz University of Technology, offers extensive simulations of electrical systems and grids in its advanced laboratory for precisely such tasks.
The challenge
- Response times well below 50 µs
- Versatile programming functions
- Delay-free amplification of the signals from the real-time simulators in both directions
- Wide basic frequency range from DC to 1000Hz
- High modulation bandwidth of 5kHz
- Scalability up to 1000 kVA
Our solution
The laboratory was equipped with two bidirectional 30 kVA grid simulators . Together with real-time computers, they reproduce precise grid models and enable both the simulation of the supply grid and source-side operation. In principle, three operating modes can be selected. The devices can operate as a programmable grid simulator, remote-controlled 4Q AC voltage amplifier or as an electronic AC load with programmable RLC load impedance.
The system can be easily and comprehensively adapted to the various tasks that need to be carried out in the test laboratory for research, development and EOL tests. Components can be added at any time, allowing the institute to react flexibly to new requirements.
Compliance & Quality
All products in our portfolio stand for the highest quality and tested safety. We and our partner Regatron AG have a quality management system certified to EN ISO 9001:2015 to ensure reliable processes. All products meet CE and UKCA requirements, including full testing and documentation obligations. For North American applications, REGATRON supports project-specific UL/CSA field markings (on request).
